Iggy Pop on American Idol

Yes it was a real wild night at the American Idol April 7, 2011 results show. This American idol week was unusual to say the least. The Wednesday’s April 6th guest performer, guitarist Jeff Beck cancelled. There was no replacement. Will I. Am vocal coached the contestants and Gwen Stefani dressed female contestants. Wednesday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme left the field wide open for performance song choice. But American Idol fans got to hear a genuine Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Iggy Pop of the Stooges, perform on Thursday’s, April 7th, 2011 Results Show.

Two guest performances occurred Thursday night. The first was by season four American Idol alumni Constantine Maroulis. Near the middle of the show, Constantine took the stage and performed “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers. His interpretation of “Unchained Melody” was slower than the original and had some melodic variations. Overall it was a good performance. The audience and judges seemed please to have him return to the American Idol stage. Constantine James Maroulis was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 17th, 1975 and moved to Wyckoff, New Jersey. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for the role he played in the musical “Rock of Ages.” Constantine studied trumpet at a young age and graduated from the Boston Conservatory with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He has been in independent films, performed off-Broadway and played a lead role in the tour of “Rent.” Constantine also appeared in an episode of the NBC TV show “Law and Order: SUV.” Constantine's guest performance ended coolly and it was mentioned that he had recently become a Dad with the birth of his daughter and walked of the stage with cheering applause from the audience.

The guest star performer for the April 7th, 2011 Results Show was the front-man of the “Stooges”, Iggy Pop. He ripped on to the stage with no shirt, tight black jeans and long blonde hair. Although his performance wasn’t anything spectacular, the audience loved it. Many might not know of Iggy, his hay-day was back in the 1980’s. He sang “Real Wild Child” and it was wild. Iggy ran back and forth across the stage and got up in Jennifer Lopez’s face while singing “I’m a real wild child…” Iggy Pop’s real name is James Newell Osterberg, Jr.; he was born April 21st, 1947. Iggy played drums in High School and performed with the Iguanas and the Stooges bands. His voice is heard in a number of film soundtracks. Iggy Pop studied the Doors and Jim Morrison to develop his punk-rock style of singing. The audience and judges were entertained by his performance. It is inspiring to have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee perform for the American Idol contestants, judges and audience. It was a crazy surprise to see Iggy Pop on the AI stage.
